The Cricut Venture was a large cutting machine that also include many accessories to help with various use cases and cleaning operations.
Automatic Cut-Off Tool
The automatic cut-off tool was an ABS part that included a 420 Stainless Steel over molded blade. The part required a full machine tolerance stack to ensure that the tool properly fell into the cut-off groove and provided a straight clean cut. The lower portion of the tool has a small PC cap to help prevent wear.
Auto Cut-Off Tool Protective Cap
The protective cap was designed to have a slider pass through feature that acted as an undercut to latch the cap into place. It was very important to get the correct interference to ensure retention but also provided easy removal. Due to this need, I design the part so that the undercut could modified in a steel safe way so it could be dialed in easily.
Manual Cut-Off Tool
The manual cut-off tool is PC+PBT blended part with a 420 Stainless Steel blade over molded into the body. When initially designing this part only PC material was used, this led to some cracking around the over molded blade. The PC+PBT blend helped reduce shrink and reduce the notch sensitivity of just PC plastic. I performed various acetic acid tests on this part to help identify materials that were less sensitive to crack near the over molded blade.
